Livonia, MI Community

Earth Day is just around the corner, and Livonia, Michigan, is gearing up to make April 22 a day to remember. With a mix of hands-on activities, local programs, and eco-friendly initiatives, Livonia is proving why it’s a community that cares about the planet. Whether you’re a seasoned environmentalist or just looking for ways to get involved, this city has something for everyone. Let’s dive into what makes Earth Day in Livonia so special.

Earth Day 2025: A Global Call to Action

This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” is all about renewable energy and taking action to triple global clean electricity generation by 2030. It’s not just a lofty goal—it’s a movement. Livonia residents can join the global push by participating in local events, pledging eco-friendly actions, and spreading the word on social media with hashtags like #EarthActionDay and #OurPowerOurPlanet. From advocating for renewable energy to teaching kids about sustainability, Earth Day 2025 is your chance to make an impact.

Kick Off With “Earth Explorers: Nature’s Neighborhood”

Start your Earth Day celebrations early with Livonia’s “Earth Explorers: Nature’s Neighborhood” event on April 10. Held at the Friends Meeting House (20501 Newburgh Road), this program is perfect for young environmentalists aged 5-12. For just $5 per child, kids will learn about nature, explore local ecosystems, and discover how they can help protect the planet—all while having fun.

  • Time: 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Location: Friends Meeting House
  • Cost: $5 per child
Pro tip: Register online to secure your spot before it fills up!

Livonia’s Yard Waste Program: Spring Cleaning with a Green Twist

Livonia residents don’t just talk about sustainability—they live it. Starting March 24, the city’s weekly separated yard waste program kicks off, running through December. This initiative makes it easy to keep your yard tidy while staying eco-friendly.

Here’s how it works:

  • Place yard waste curbside by 7 a.m., separate from trash and recycling bins.
  • Use plastic or metal cans (maximum 35 gallons) marked with a green and white yard waste sticker or a large “X.” Paper compost bags are also allowed without stickers.
  • Keep containers under 50 pounds—and yes, you can put out up to 8 containers per week.
  • Smaller brush and branches should be cut down and bundled (maximum length: 4 feet; maximum diameter: 4 inches). You’re allowed up to 5 bundles weekly.

For larger branches or wood waste, take advantage of Livonia’s seasonal curbside truck service or drop off materials for free at Mid-Michigan Recycling.
